The Bartell Family has operated businesses in the Pacific Northwest continuously for 123 years. Today’s Bartell family leadership continues to uphold the proud history of serving the community while keeping an eye toward the future.

Geroge D. BartellGeorge D. Bartell
Chairman & CEO, Bartell Drugs

George D. Bartell took the helm of the company in 1990 as president and CEO, following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather. He became chairman in 2001. Prior to being elected president, George spent seven years as assistant vice president dealing primarily with real estate and pricing. He began his career, as his father did before him, learning the business from the ground up. He was hired at the chain’s 4th & Pine location in downtown Seattle by the store manager, not by his father, and held positions from shelf stocker to cashier.

His education includes high school at Seattle’s Lakeside School, Bowdoin College in Maine and the Harvard Business School. George is active in a variety of civic and professional organizations where he has held various posts including a board seat with the national Association of Chain Drug Stores, a board position with the Woodland Park Zoo Society, an executive committee post with the Pacific Northwest chapter of the Young President’s Organization and the Salvation Army King County Advisory Board.

Jean Bartell Barber, granddaughter of the company’s founder, George H. Bartell, Sr., serves as Vice Chairman and Treasurer of Bartell Drugs, with responsibility for finance, risk management, adinistration, human resources, and strategic planning. Over the past seven years, Jean has also spearheaded the Executive Training Program at Bartell Drugs, which trains employees for executive level positions within the company. Prior to becoming Vice Chairman, Jean was CFO of the company for nine years and spent an additional six years dealing primarily with risk management, property/casualty insurance and computer management. She began her career as a teenager as her brother and father did before her, learning about the family business taking store inventories and working at the chain’s old Triangle store in downtown Seattle as a cashier clerk.

Jean was graduated magna cum laude from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and graduated with distinction from The Wharton School’s MBA program at the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to become assistant vice president of the balance sheet management department at North Carolina National Bank (now Bank of America) and the treasurer of a home building business in North Carolina before moving back to Seattle to continue her involvement in the family business. Jean is a member of the Executive Advisory Council of Seattle Pacific University. In 2008-09 she was Co-Chair of the Alaska Yukon Pacific Blue Ribbon Task Force for the City of Seattle.

Dave has 30 years of senior management experience in finance, product development, operations and real estate investment. He served as a construction loan officer for North Carolina National Bank, now Bank of America, Real Estate Acquisitions Partner at McGuire Properties, Charlotte, N.C. and as Director of Real Estate and Development for The Bartell Drug Company. As an entrepreneur, he was founder of three companies – a land development and homebuilding company, a company to export non-prescription pharmaceuticals to Russia and other republics of the former Soviet Union, and a firm that sponsored real estate investment opportunities on behalf of accredited investors in the Pacific Northwest.

Dave was co-founder of Greenwood Technologies, LLC, a company that developed, produced and sold high-efficiency, clean-burning wood-fired home central heating furnaces, and a founder and director of Absolute Business, Inc., a business acceleration and consulting firm. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University, he served for nearly seven years on active duty as a United States Navy Special Warfare Officer. He holds an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
